How To Get Mexican Visa

As of May 1st 2010, all the potential TJ applicants with a valid US visa don't require a Mexican visa for a visit of up to 180 days (none of us want the visa stamping trip to be longer than 2 days). What this means is that it might make more sense to get visa stamping in TJ done while your current US visa is still valid and has 1-2 months on it before it expires.

You can check out the details posted on the Consulate General of Mexico, San Jose website.

However, if you find yourself in a situation where you need to get a Mexican visa then follows the steps below. I have explained how to get Mexican Visa at the Mexican Consulate in San Diego since it will be convenient for most TJ visa applicants. Its really straight forward and simple.

You can plan on spending a day in San Diego to get the Mexican visa. The embassy details are as follows:

1549 India St., San Diego, CA 92101
Tel: (619) 308 9953* Fax: (619) 231-4802
E-mail:
info@consulmexsd.org

The embassy is open  from 8am - 1pm (Monday through Friday) and you can go for walk-in Mexican visa and get it in couple of hours.

Here's the list of paperwork you need:
  1. Completed Mexican Visa Application Form
  2. Original Passport and 1 Copy (front, back and all visa pages)
  3. US Consulate, TJ Appointment Letter
  4. Current I-797 packet and 1 copy
  5. Employment Verification Letter stating the current salary
  6. 2-3 Bank Statements for address verification
  7. $36 Cash for Mexican tourist visa
  8. 1 passport size photo

At the Mexican Consulate:
  1. You'll see several queues outside the consulate but go straight to the guard. Tell him you want to apply for visa. He'll point you to the stairs and ask you to go to the upper level.
  2. Go to window #1, and the person behind the counter will ask you for all the documents listed above. If your docs look good then you'll be asked to take a seat.
  3. After an hour or so, your name will be called at window #1 and you'll be handed over a slip that you need to take it over to window #10.
  4. Wait in the queue at window #10 and pay $36 when your turn comes. The slip will be stamped and handed back to you.
  5. Again take a seat for few minutes until your name is called at window #1.
  6. Collect your passport with a 30 day Mexican visa and you're done!
